The plains between Rothenthurm and Biberbrugg in the canton of Schwyz are known as one of the countries largest upland moor landscapes. The area was preserved after the Swiss population’s acceptance of the Rothenthurm Moorland Protection Initiative in 1987,  against the government’s recommendation to create in the moorlands area a training ground for Swiss Armee.
